Patients with bloodstream infections are given a numerical number called the Pitt Bacteremia Score. It indicates the likelihood of patients dying within 14 days. The Pitt bacteremia score was originally intended to be used as an early mortality risk prediction for only bloodstream infections, but numerous studies have shown that it is also helpful for a variety of other bacteremia and non-bacteremic diseases. It is now used to predict death in a variety of bloodstream and non-bacterial diseases.
