The traditional version of the game employs a single deck of 52 playing cards. Klondike solitaire begins with the cards being shuffled before 28 cards are dealt out in seven piles onto the table.

The goal of the game is to arrange all of the cards in ascending order — from ace to king — into the deck's four suits (diamonds, clubs, hearts, and spades).

The piles are referred to as tableaus, and they are arranged on the table from left to right:

Seven cards

The bottom card in each tableau is turned face up, and the remaining 24 cards (those not dealt out) are piled together in a single pile known as the stock.
