Major announcements regarding the most popular Blizzard franchises like World of Warcraft and Diablo usually take place at BlizzCon that usually happens in November. The current COVID-19 epidemic has shaken that system. Blizzard has moved to an on-line BlizzCon Event scheduled for February 2021. It also had planned an identical online event for February 2022. BlizzCon 2022 was later pulled due to the ongoing fallout of numerous discrimination and sexual harassment lawsuits and investigations involving Activision Blizzard.


Blizzard announced at the time of the cancellation the company was taking the time to "reimagine" the future of BlizzCon might be in the near future, and that future updates regarding different Blizzard franchises would be communicated via official franchise channels and with the BlizzCon team backing those efforts.


This means it could mean that news such as World of Warcraft's next expansion will include as well as updates regarding the state of Diablo 2. and how Diablo IV is shaping up (just to mention a few) can no longer be tied to major fan events but can be disclosed whenever the developers are ready. The possibility that Blizzard casually tweeted out they were making a brand-new survival game IP shows from the reality that these kinds of announcements can be made anytime.


Activision Blizzard is currently in the process of being acquired by Microsoft in an agreement worth $69 billion, pending regulatory approval. It's not clear what the deal will mean for Blizzard's top franchises in regards to those games appearing on the Game Pass service or becoming Xbox exclusives for consoles.
