The University of Bologna: The University of Bologna is the most established college in continuous operation. It was founded in 1088 in Bologna, Italy.

In 1158 the college received a charter from Frederick I Barbarossa. In the nineteenth century, a group of ancient tribes continued to establish the university in 1088, which would become the most experienced continuous college on the planet. This is much earlier than Oxford University, which has evidence of teaching in 1096.

Bologna was the first to apply the term university to the institution of subordinate students and employers that make up the college.

During the Middle Ages, the University of Bologna was well known throughout Europe for its humanities and law schools.

Artists Dante and Petrarca studied at this college. Formally known as Alma Mater Studiorum, the college is a coeducational institution supported by the state. It offers courses like Expressions, Law, Medicine, Pharmacy, Science, Design, Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine, and Teaching Methodology. Italian semiologist and essayist Umberto Eco holds the chair of semiotics at the College. Italy's previous prime minister, Romano Prodi, was a teacher in the economics department.
