Gion Matsuri is one of the three most famous festivals in Kyoto, and was established in 869 AD. The festival lasts for fifteen days from July 1 to 16th, and is held each year on a different block along the Hanami-koji street. Gion Festival begins with an evening ceremony called Yamaboko Jinko (lit: floating island deity) which takes place at the Yoshida Shrine.  

The Gion Festival, also known as the "Gion Matsuri" in Japanese, is one of Japan's most famous festivals. The festival takes place every year on July 17 and 18 to honor the god Susano-o who slew a dragon threatening Kyoto in ancient times. There are many interesting things to do during the Gion Festival such as seeing the procession or watching locals perform traditional dances with colorful costumes and music.
