No NBA commish Adam Silver wont kill one-and-done

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. When the day comes thatNBA commi sioner Adam Silver officially announces the leagues decision to alter its policy regarding eligibility for its player draft it's coming it will be a maneuver that makes headlines acro s the nation.Alot of those organizations will certainly publish some iteration of the following fake news: Silver announces death of one-and-done.But Silver will do no such thing.MORE: Trae Young proved that one-and-done wont be dead, ESPN college basketball analyst Fran Fraschilla told Sporting News. He went to college with the idea of being a two-year player, and he wound up playing so well he became the fifth pick in the draft.Silver has indicated the league soon will remove the Doug Flutie Jersey rule that requires athletes to be 19 years old and a year removed from high school graduation before entering the draft. So the NBA will remove the current age limit, allowing players to enter the draft as they approach their high school graduations. That will not end one-and-done, though, because players still will be rolling into college, playing a single year and entering the draft at season's end.How that will affect the health of college basketball is difficult to project. We don't know the extent to which players will choose to enter the draft after a single NCAA season, in part because we do not know to what extent players will skip past college after the rule is changed. But we can examine recent history to get an idea how common and disruptive to the college game it might become. In the past five years, 69 players entered the draft following a single college season. Of those players, 38 ranked as consensus top-10 prospects coming out of high school. Another eight ranked between 11-15, seven from 16-20 and 16 20th or lower. Nearly half of all one-and-dones were players who, as they arrived on campus, fell into the categories of unlikely or no chance to leave after one season.Such players as Zaire Smith of Texas Tech, Lauri Markkanen of Arizona, Zach Collins of Gonzaga and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of Kentucky were not expected to Buffalo Bills T Shirts be one-and-done. None became a sophomore, though. There are not going to be as many guys ready, said recruiting analyst Evan Daniels of 247Sports. If you show promise and you show upside, theres going to be guys that want to go. There are going to be plenty of guys going one-and-done. The only way thats going to change is you put in a two-year rule.MORE: The Rice Commi sion, in i suing its report ostensibly designed to addre s i sues in college hoops that were part of the FBI investigation, emphatically denounced the age limit and called on the NBA to abolish it but also indicated it did not favor what has been called the baseball rule, in which the league would agree not to draft for two or three years those players who had entered college. So, yeah, one-and-done is here to stay. It just will occur with le ser players than Anthony Davis, Marvin Bagley and Kevin Love.Michigan State coach Tom Izzo told Sporting News he has great concerns about the impact on roster management for colleges, particularly with player transfers on the increase and the po sibility resulting another Rice Commi sion recommendation that players who enter the draft may be allowed to return to college if undrafted. And heres the other thing: Who do you recruit? Izzo said.Colleges will have to decide whether a highly rated player in high school will be interested in playing college basketball on the way to O.J. Howard Jersey the league. Miles Bridges was the No. 10 player in the loaded 2016 recruiting cla s. The Spartans would have had to decide whether it was worth the risk to recruit him only to discover the following May he would enter the draft the way it happened to Duke when it had Shaun Livingstons commitment in 2004, or Washington, with Martell Webster in 2006.There also will be cases like that of Jaren Jackson, whom the Spartans were delighted to sign when he was a 6-9 forward, rated No. 22 in the 2017 cla s as he entered his senior year at La Lumiere School in Indiana and elated to welcome to campus a year later as a 6-11 forward who had risen to No. 6 overall. With the Baylon Spector Jersey age limit, Jackson would have had to decide then whether he wanted even a year in college. If he chose the draft, MSU would have mi sed the chance to recruit someone else who would have chosen the Spartans.I would say some coaches will have to evaluate more closely than they have in the one-and-done era, Fraschilla said.MORE: The drive to one-and-done has been a centerpiece of NCAA president Mark Emmerts platform almost since he accepted the job in 2010, so it was no surprise to see it as the foundation of the Rice Commi sion report. One-and-done has played a significant role in corrupting and destabilizing college basketball, the report read, although it offered no real evidence to support this contention. But that declaration was enough to get the NBA to move.Silver noted this week that, in e sence, the college community is saying, We do not want those players anymore. I think that tips the scales in my mind. All the Commi sion did by pursuing this misguided agenda is move the goalposts. Or, better analogy for this discu sion, the basket support.I think a lot of what theyre doing isnt fixing the actual i sues at hand, Daniels said. If you get rid of one-and-done and guys can go from high school, I dont know that it fixes the problem. Those are elite-level guys that some might be doing extra things to get, but it just means were going Boogie Basham Jersey to push it back and the guys ranked 15-30 are going to be the guys people do extra things to get.So college basketball likely will have corruption still, and it certainly will continue to live with one-and-done. The Rice Commi sions work was an empty gesture and ami sed opportunity.
