A comparison between the flux core MIG welding mechanisms

The major points of differences between flux core and MIF welding processes are mentioned below: 


The wire involved in Flux core MIG welding Both Flux core MIG welding methods have a spool of strong wire for providing the filler metal to the weld. However, there is a primary difference in the kind of wire that is being used in both the welding methods. A solid wire is used in MIG welding, whereas a tubular wire is used in flux core welding. 

Method of air protection 

When welding is conducted, the hot metal cannot contact the normal air, which may lead to a bad weld. In the case of MIG welding, a characteristic shielding gas is used: a mixture of argon and carbon dioxide. In the case of flux core welding, the flux that is placed in the system’s centre heats up eventually releases gas. This provides immense protection from the air that is present outside. 

Weld’s strength 

 

The welders often debate whether MIG welding or flux core welding offers similar strength or if one is better than the other. The truth is that the strength gained by both of these processes is similar. 

Metal penetration 

 

This is tough to compare MIG welding and flux core welding’s level of metal penetration. The reason behind the same is that the metal penetration depends on the welding method and the amperage and voltage of the flux core MIG welder being used.
