"Yesterday we contacted the developers of well-known HD projects, and we asked them to cease development of their RuneScape Gold games, as this is an area we are actively investigating," Jagex stated. Jagex addressed 117 with the news that the company's work on an HD edition of Old School Runescape was "still still in the early exploration stages" but "very far from being finished."

"Naturally, this means that any fan-driven project that intends to alter the style of Old School RuneScape looks is at odds with our own goals," Jagex wrote to 117. "We consider it vital that there is consistency in the manner that Old School looks as a result, so we'd like to make certain that our changes made in the official version of the game will be the only ones available.

Hopefully the news regarding the possibility that Jagex and his Old School team are tackling this endeavor with a seriousness is something that excites you however it could require us to respectfully request that you stop the personal project you are working on."

117 claimed that they would offer Jagex an alternative that included removing their software once Jagex had released their own version, and also giving Jagex "collaborative oversight" over Runelite HD's visual design.

"They declined outright," 117 said. "I am completely sad and disappointed with Jagex, and I am very disappointed for this lengthy journey, I'm not able to reveal this project to you. 117's mod doesn't seem to violate Jagex's rules for third-party players, but the Runescape developer claims that it's making changes to the guidelines over the next week to include references projects that alter the look and feel to the player.

Original Runelite developer Adam1210 shared his thoughts on Reddit in which he said that allowing Runelite HD to continue would be a net benefit to future updates developed by Jagex.

"I strongly oppose adding it to the "third group guidelines," Adam1210 said. "Most of those guidelines are trying to define what the line between "quality of life] and cheating lies and I'm of the opinion that most people would agree that the current guidelines are a fair representation of that, and it keeps the game integrity.

There isn't any unfair advantage in the slightest for improved graphics, and only impacts you when you enable it. It's simply a misapplication of guidelines. This is, in the end, an issue for all involved and I wish Jagex would think about it."

A few players of The Runelite HD project have taken to the town square of Falador, a capital city in one of the main kingdoms in Runescape and held an unofficial sit-in similar to the demonstration World of Warcraft players took part in the month of July. Participants can be seen on the video below, posting texts that criticize Jagex for the decision and hashtags such as #Free117. Another video shows more players "marching" on the streets of Falador Square.
