Obtaining a driver's license is a rite of passage for a young adult, and it is an exciting moment, but this joyful fearful event has an emotional and financial impact on the entire family. The entire family is emotionally invested in an adolescent obtaining his or her driver's license. When training their adolescents to drive, parents are afraid for their own lives.

They are concerned that their child may cause an accident and injure themselves or others.

As approaching traffic passes past, parents witness their lives flash before their eyes, unaware that an inexperienced driver is behind the wheel. Even more alarming are the occasions when teens drive without their parents. How will they cope if no one is there to advise them on what to look out for, what to do when to stop, and so on? Parents pace the floor, grasping the phone, waiting for the police call.

Some are envious of their siblings' newfound liberties and can't wait to get their own. Others are horrified when their newly licensed brother or sister brings them to locations their formerly excessively careful parents used to take them. As all of the new sensations of being a responsible driver are taught, the new driver also feels anxiety, excitement, and horror behind the wheel. Few things are as expensive as transportation, and when a new adolescent driver obtains his or her license, the family must make some financial concessions.

The Need For Driving License

Melbourne and the majority of Australia's metro cities have excellent public transportation, particularly if you live in or near the CBD. In Victoria, you may use one Myki travel pass for all means of transportation, including train, bus, and tram. So, when I relocated to Melbourne, acquiring a driver's license was not at the top of my priority list.

It turned out to be a huge error. First and foremost, public transportation did not prove to be as good as I had hoped, particularly in the suburbs and on weekends or public holidays. On weekends, you may expect to wait anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour for a bus. In Melbourne, train timetables are often disrupted by signal failures and other issues.

Second, I had a lot of time to prepare for the driving test over the first few days. At the very least, I could have obtained my Learner's Permit and been prepared for my driving test later in the year. Your spare time decreases if you obtain a job and start a family. Anyway, it's pointless to mourn over spilled milk.

When my family joined me in late 2015, the demand for a car shifted from "we can live without a car" to "we need a car right now." Living without a car is similar to living without a phone in that you can go through most of your daily activities, but it takes a lot of time and energy, especially if you have children. I won't bother you with specifics, but you can understand how insane it is to push a pram in Melbourne's cold rain.

After over a year of struggle without a car, I finally purchased one in June 2016. As you might expect, because I didn't have a license, I had to enlist the assistance of a buddy to test.
