1. First things, first. Shut off the water supply valve found at the back of your toilet and then flush the tank. Lift the lid off the tank and scoop the remaining water inside. You may also use a sponge to absorb any excess water. Once you're done, detach the water supply lines with the help of your pliers or wrench. This will prevent the tank from filling up while you're working on your toilet.

2. Now check the washers of the toilet located at its base and get rid of their caps with a flathead screwdriver. There are bolts there that secure the toilet bowl to its flange. Carefully remove them, too.
