Based on roguelikes, such as FTL and games for parties like Overcooked, It Means Warp sees players control the crew members of the ship, operating various equipment, aiming weapons and conducting repairs, ultimately charting a course through the dark and dangerous space with RS Gold.
To find out more about Jagex's publishing This Means Warp, we spoke to Outlier Games' founders Paul Froggatt and Matt Rathbun, and Lead Product Management for Jagex Robert Fox-Galassi for their thoughts on this exciting partnership.
Much like many indie developers our entry into the games industry came from trying out games and game ideas over a a long period of time before deciding to create something that was playable!
I've had 10 years of experience working at Google before I decided to go into developing games full-time. Matt's career spans building Hollywood computer systems for movie sets, and a brief stint in South Korean esports and mobile game development. We're so excited to show what we've built with this Means Warp.
A variety of video games have inspired an aspiring developer to make their own. It's very rare to find a derivative work picked up by the creator of the original game.
This, however, was the case with Brendan Malcolm, the one-man team of Australian game developer Games By Malcs, whose idle RPG Melvor Idle has been published by Jagex the company that developed RuneScape which is a game which was the primary motivation behind his own project.
Melvor Idle strips away the images and 3D environments from RuneScape and other similar MMOs and reduces it to a menu-based idle game which lets players manage their skills, inventory , and quests. In combat, completing battles and winning earns XP and loot which can later be invested into whichever improvement tree or skill tree players choose, while repeating activities such as crafting or woodcutting yields their own benefits.
Malcolm has played RuneScape since he was a kid He has also played in the top idle games such as Clicker Heroes, Cookie Clicker and NGU Idle. While he was a fan but felt the genre had the potential to do something else that was enjoyable in a manner similar to Jagex's top RPG.
"So I set out to create my own and never thought that it would even be released, much less become so popular," he tells GamesIndustry.biz. "I was looking to create something different from the existing idle game mould, something that was feature-rich and allowed players to have a real choices about how they wanted to develop instead of just increasing numbers over time.
After pondering the idea for a few minutes behind closed doors I started to mesh ideas and techniques from classic MMOs and the well-known idle game strategy, creating something that can be played at leisure, in the car and fit in a player's busy lifestyle."
Melvor adds: "While the numbers and statistics stuff isn't something that all players are most interested in when playing MMOs however, it's the thing that people who are devoted fans tend to tend to gravitate towards after the exploration has been completed with Buy RS 2007 Gold. As it's often so central to the things that long-term players' focus is it makes sense to make this an integral part of the game's design. Additionally, it is compatible with design elements common in many idle games."
